Letter to the editor: Let’s not mislead anyone when talking about dark sky initiatives
Silverthorne
First of all, let me say that as a resident of a community that practices dark sky policies, I enjoy being able to see the amazing night sky that living in Summit affords.
However, as a neurophysiologist with over 40 years of experience in sleep medicine, I have to say that the penultimate paragraph of your article is both true and completely misleading. Yes, artificial light can have a negative impact on human health, but, no, that has absolutely nothing to do with outdoor lighting. It is the impact of indoor lighting on sleep patterns that is significant. Outdoor lighting has zero effect on health.
In addition, some of the articles from the Audubon Society don’t seem to support the conclusions posited by the dark sky advocates regarding light pollution as a cause of falling bird populations.
Again, I am a great fan of dark skies having spent my entire adult life in and around major cities. However, let’s not confuse “truthiness” (per Stephen Colbert) with objective fact.
