Letter to the editor: Multiple questions following the death of Charlie Foster

James Tuthill
Silverthorne

There is not one word about the effect of the sad shooting death of Charlie Foster on the police officers who shot him. Those officers will have to live with the fact that they shot and killed Mr. Foster. Don’t we think that their mental health is affected too and they may need support?

Mr. Foster was apparently banging on neighbors’ doors with some type of weapon. In today’s environment with numerous tragic shootings involving firearms, his behavior seems to me to be a threat to public safety.  The officers may have prevented the injury or death of others, but we’ll never know.

Where were Mr. Foster’s parents? I hope Summit Daily will investigate his background to the same extent that you say you’re going to investigate the background of the involved officers. Mr. Foster’s history is critical to a full understanding of the circumstances leading to his unfortunate death.

You’ve reported that Mr. Foster’s aunt said he had a BB gun. Did she tell or try to tell the officers that? If he only had a BB gun, what did it look like, and how are the officers involved supposed to determine that that was all he had?

Mr. Maciejewski tells us, correctly, to wait for all of the facts before making any judgments. He’s right, and we all need to be patient and hear all sides of the story including the officers involved before reaching any conclusions.
