Letter to the editor: Please vote yes on Ballot Measure 1B
Breckenridge Open Space Advisory Commission chairman
I am writing to ask for your support on Summit County Ballot Measure 1B that will ensure the continuation of Summit County’s efforts to preserve, acquire and maintain our priceless open spaces.
I have had the honor of serving on the Breckenridge Open Space Advisory Commission since 2016. I have seen first hand how Summit County and the town of Breckenridge have partnered to accomplish many shared goals: protecting and maintaining open space, promoting responsible land use and acquiring critical parcels to maintain natural beauty and wildlife corridors are only a few of these achievements.
In 2008, voters approved a ballot measure that authorized funds for the acquisition and preservation of open space and trails. In an exceptionally successful collaboration between Summit County and the town of Breckenridge, almost 5,000 acres of land in the Upper Blue Basin has been protected, 4,100 of that as joint projects. These are a few of those successes:
- B&B Mines (2005): 1,850 acres of land in the Golden Horseshoe, protecting and expanding the trails between French Gulch and Tiger Road
- Laurium Trailhead and 100 acres of open space, access to Bald Mountain
- Mining claims on the front side of Bald to protect habitat and recreational access
- Protection of wetlands at the south end of the county leading up to Hoosier Pass
There is not a doubt that this partnership has made a huge impact on anyone who lives here and to our many visitors.
So please vote yes Nov. 5 for Measure 1B. It won’t mean a higher tax bill for any of us, but everyone benefits from the hard work and collaboration between Summit County and the town of Breckenridge.
Thanks for your consideration.
