Letter to the editor: Regulate road bikes racing down recpaths in Summit

Gail Westwood

This is in response to Jan Penz’s letter published on July 9 that was titled “I have concerns about the plan to expand e-bike use in Summit.”

Over the last few years, I have read every letter printed in the Summit Daily concerning e-bikes. Nearly all of them are critical of e-bikes. I am tired of reading these complaints and would like to make my comments about this situation.

My husband, who is in his 70s, and I have lived in Summit County for 25 years and are no longer able to ride our road bikes up hills, and, therefore, ride e-bikes on the bike paths now. We never pass anyone without indicating that we are passing them ‘on their left’. We usually ride at about 15 mph or less and never go as fast as 25 mph. We always slow down when we see children or families or pedestrians ahead.

Time and time again we are passed by road bikes traveling up to speeds of 30 mph (or more). More than half of them never warn us that they are passing and never, ever slow down! I am shocked that we have not been involved in an accident yet involving one of these racing bikes.

I suggest regulating them instead.
