Letter to the editor: Snowstorm gridlock is not fair to locals or visitors
Silverthorne
Another snowy week at the end of February and another gridlock in Summit County.
I read that some elected officials want better communication. That is not the answer. We need to take a good hard look at the solution — the movement of cars and trucks when they are diverted into Silverthorne. Traffic backups because of problems on Interstate 70 are not new, and yet each one is treated as a surprise, followed by a shrug. Rather than approving more and more housing units, the county government, Silverthorne and Dillon need to take a good hard look at the problem, which is only going to increase. We watched the disaster last Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend and this year’s Presidents Day weekend, again, gridlock. We live at Eagles Nest, and it took my son over two hours to get home from Keystone. I am not a fan of parking garages, but something has to be done. Realistically, Some property has to be set aside for those drivers kicked off 70 and awaiting its reopening. That would have a side benefit of allowing the travelers to get out of their cars and shop or get a bite to eat. This continual gridlock is not fair to locals, whose numbers increase. It is not fair to travelers forced to sit in their cars for hours.
Something concrete has to be done. Otherwise, the elected officials are just shrugging their shoulders. The status quo is not acceptable.
