Letter to the editor: Some more info on history of snowboarding in Colorado
Carbondale
This letter is about and article in the Summit Daily News on Jan. 28 about snowboarding. When snowboarding came to Breckenridge my husband, Art Bowles, was vice president of Breckenridge Ski Resort. Jerry Blann was president of all the mountains that the Aspen Ski Co. owned. The Burton snowboard people approached Art. Blann told him to check with the head of the national ski association to see what he thought. Art flew to Florida to attending their meeting. The man in charge refused to meet with him. So he went back to Blann telling him it would be a good marketing tool. Jerry finally relented but saying to Art if someone is hurt and we end up in a lawsuit you will be fired. Art considered all the problems and made the decision to go ahead. The rest is history. Art is deceased, but as his wife I remember. Jim Gill worked on mountain at that time.
