Letter to the editor: Stand up for our hardworking immigrant neighbors and their families

Mountain Dreamers

Mountain Dreamers stands with our Summit County families and all immigrant families as we strongly oppose the announced Immigrations and Customs Enforcement raids targeting families in their homes throughout the U.S., including Colorado.

We believe the president’s advance notice of the ICE raids, in which he announced that “ICE will begin the process of removing the millions” of undocumented immigrants in the U.S., and the subsequent postponement “for two weeks” for negotiations, is a cruel political ploy designed to instill fear in immigrant families and to stoke an irrational fear of immigrants in his political base.

We believe a threat to separate families should never be a negotiating tactic for any government leader.

Here in Summit County and the mountain region, our friends and neighbors are afraid and have been calling local attorneys and support agencies to express their fears. Their No. 1 fear is they will be separated from their children. That this threat comes directly from the very top of our national government is indefensible.

We are also very concerned with continuing reports of families and children being held in detention at the U.S border in inhumane, unsafe and worsening conditions. We believe our nation has the wealth and resources as well as the legal and moral responsibility to humanely and efficiently process the families seeking political asylum, safety and a better life in the U.S.

We urge all residents of Summit County, especially our local elected leaders, to stand up with Mountain Dreamers and voice strong support for our hardworking and productive immigrant neighbors and their families, and voice firm opposition to any actions designed to sow fear and division in our community.

Summit and the mountain region is our community. We stand up in support of our friends, our neighbors, our colleagues and our classmates. Mountain Dreamers believes we are one community, and stronger because of it.
