I am writing to express my strong support for Ballot Issue 7C.

As a longtime mentor in the Colorado Mountain College Mountain Scholars Program, I have had the privilege of working closely with local Summit students whose lives have been transformed by access to affordable, high-quality education. The college opens doors for young people in our mountain communities and helps them see a future where they can stay, work, and thrive right here at home. The college offers certificate programs as well as AA and BS degrees.

Ballot measure 7C is not a new tax. It simply restores the authority that more than two-thirds of local voters approved in 2018, allowing the college to continue providing affordable, high-quality programs that benefit our entire region. Passing 7C will allow the college to move forward with planned expansions in skilled trades, first responder training, and health care — fields where rural Colorado faces critical shortages. Currently, Colorado Mountain College is the only provider of skilled trades and first responder training in the central mountains.

Most community members do not realize that 40% of the college’s enrollments are high school students in our local high schools, who study Colorado Mountain College courses while still in high school at no cost. Supporting 7C will enhance these opportunities and help prepare students for good jobs right here in the mountains.

The Board of Trustees is nationally recognized for its leadership and for making smart, responsible decisions for our region. Their strong track record of partnering with local school districts, employers, and local governments shows that they understand what our communities need to succeed.
I urge my neighbors to join me in voting YES on 7C this November. Your vote is an investment in the future of our students, our workforce, and the health and safety of our mountain communities.
