Letter to the editor: There’s a reason A-Basin patrollers are trying to unionize

With regards to Alan Henceroth’s quote in the Summit Daily about Arapahoe Basin Ski Patrol’s push to unionize: can he be more detailed?

Why would Arapahoe Basin Ski Patrol have been able to reach a majority vote to unionize if their leadership and management were, in fact, easy to communicate with, transparent and concerned with the wellbeing of staff over the wellbeing of their wallets?

Unionizing is hard work. Extra work. Unpaid work. It’s risky and exhausting. Most people don’t get pushed to talking about making change unless change is needed, and when the only folks naysaying are the ones who stand to lose when workers have some power, shouldn’t we be more skeptical of them?

Why, really, Alan, are your patrollers taking this on when they can so easily speak with you? The skiing public would love to hear anything other than cooperate boilerplate, given these men and women are charged with granting our safety, among other things.

This ball is rolling whether leadership likes it or not, but can’t the community at least hear something other than crap from one of their most beloved ski area’s leadership?
