Letter to the editor: We should support our hard-working, tax-paying immigrants
Breckenridge
As a full-time local resident and founder of the Summit County Immigrant Protection Team, I want to express my unwavering support of our local immigrant community during this extremely troubling time in U.S. history. While already facing unique challenges, this community is now navigating daily life with even greater fear and uncertainty. I want to remind our immigrant neighbors that you are seen, valued and supported in Summit County.
Immigration plays a critical role in strengthening and sustaining Summit County. Approximately 9% of our population is foreign-born, and 25% of children in our schools speak Spanish as their primary language. These are our friends, neighbors, business owners, workforce members, and taxpayers, who are an integral part of our society, making extensive contributions that benefit the entire community.
The false, destructive rhetoric is abundant, and facts matter. Immigrants work and pay taxes. Most immigrants are ineligible for federal public benefits such as welfare, food stamps, Medicaid, and Supplemental Security Income. Immigrants, including those who are undocumented, are less likely than native-born Americans to be incarcerated in prisons, convicted of crimes, or arrested. And research shows that welcoming immigrants into our communities strengthens public safety.
Lastly, I want to thank our local elected officials, law enforcement, and nonprofit organizations who have bravely chosen not to succumb to the pressure permeating across the country, encouraging mass, indiscriminate deportations. With effective policies and dedicated allies, Summit County can continue to be a diverse community, welcoming to all.
