The Breckenridge Town Council supports the proposed mill levy increase from 9 mills to 13 mills for the Red, White & Blue Fire Protection District in Breckenridge.

We believe this increase is essential for ensuring that the district can continue to provide high-quality fire protection and emergency services, especially given the challenges we face with rising fire danger and the changing dynamics of our local environment. In addition, it will bring the Red, White & Blue Fire Protection District into alignment with the other Summit County fire districts.

Breckenridge is surrounded by the White River National Forest, making our community particularly vulnerable to wildfires. In recent years, fire danger has escalated due to climate change, increasing the frequency and intensity of wildfires. This puts not only our homes and properties at risk, but also the safety of our residents and the firefighters who work tirelessly to protect us. Red, White & Blue Fire Protection District has been an essential partner in our Community Firewise programs, which will continue to be imperative as we face property insurance challenges.

With the district’s mill levy remaining unchanged since 2006, it has become increasingly difficult to maintain the high standard of service we rely on. Firefighting equipment, training, and personnel all come at a cost, and without the proper funding, the district risks falling behind in its ability to respond to emergencies and protect our community.

This mill levy increase would ensure that the Red, White & Blue Fire Protection District can continue to provide the excellent care and response times that are critical to the safety of our residents. The district has consistently demonstrated its commitment to maintaining a high level of professionalism and expertise, and we believe this increase is a necessary step to ensure that this standard is upheld moving forward.
