A healthy democracy thrives on disagreement (letter)

After having read both sides of the same-sex marriage debate articulated in these editorial pages, I can only conclude that we must agree to disagree. This occurs often in such a diverse society as ours. The problem arises when one side persecutes the other for their views.

Only, one side does this to any measurable degree. If you don’t know which side I’m speaking of, please observe what happened to Firefox’s CEO who gave a private donation to Prop 8 in California or what has been done to bankrupt business owners in Oregon and New Mexico who merely ask to be allowed to hold to their religious tenets.

Our society thrives on different opinions; but, it will not stand against the onslaught from the totalitarians who want to punish those who disagree with them.
