Bateman: Elect a Summit candidate to CMC board (letter)

An election that may be easy to miss, but one that is very important to our community is coming on Nov. 3. This is the election of the members of the Board of Trustees for Colorado Mountain College (CMC). The college is a very valuable asset to our community — not only from an educational and cultural aspect, but also from an economic perspective. The board is responsible to ensure both the continuing health of this institution and to maintain its relevance in meeting the various needs of our mountain communities.

The board members are elected at-large, meaning that, in Summit County, we also vote for candidates from other districts. For this election, four seats are up for re-election. Three of the seats are uncontested, including the representative who resides in Summit County.

The one seat that is being contested has two candidates. For this seat, Jon Warnick would be a much needed addition to the Board. Jon He a tremendous commitment to education in general and CMC in particular. I have personally worked with him during my tenure for ten years as a CMC Board member as well as with the CMC Foundation. I found him to be extremely dedicated to the college, committed to student success, affordability and meeting the needs of our communities. He has chaired the foundation and led by example in the sponsoring of scholarships. He also has firsthand knowledge of the college having taken numerous courses over the past 15 years.

The bottom line is that with his leadership skills, experience and dedication, he would be an excellent board member, role model and leader for CMC.

I urge you to vote in this important election and to vote for Jon Warnick.

Richard Bateman
