Breckenridge mayor urges support of lift-ticket tax (letter)

I am proud to say that I voted “yes” for Ballot Question 2A. A “yes” vote on 2A is required for the town of Breckenridge to receive $3.5 million annually (forever) from Vail Resorts and the Breckenridge Ski Resort. A “yes” vote will not tax season passes or summer activities at the Breckenridge Ski Resort. A “yes” vote will only assess a 4.5 percent tax on single-use ski lift tickets or multi-day ski lift tickets when used at the Breckenridge Ski Resort.

The ballot may appear confusing because it begins with the question, do you “support an additional $4 million tax?” The $4 million number comes from the Breckenridge Town Attorney (Mr. Tim Berry) and TABOR (Tax Payer Bill Of Rights passed in 1992) because if the town of Breckenridge collects more than the anticipated $3.5 million, the town would have to refund the excess amount. The stated overestimate avoids that issue.

The 2A ballot question is very long and difficult to read. Once again, Ballot Question 2A was written by the Breckenridge town attorney in total compliance with TABOR. There is no intent to deceive the electorate — only the desire to be in compliance with TABOR when asking for permission of our taxpayers to allow a new tax. As you have read in other letters of support, these additional monies would only be used for enhanced transit capabilities and better management of the automobile when it travels to Breckenridge.

The leadership of the town works hard to manage our reserves responsibly for the future of our community. The funding from 2A is essential to the town’s efforts to improve parking and transit — now and in the future. I hope you will support our town and vote “yes” on 2A.

John Warner

Breckenridge Mayor
