Breckenridge, vote ‘yes’ on 2A ballot question (letter)

We encourage Breckenridge to vote “yes” on the 2A ballot question.

Our town’s success comes from the appeal that makes it one of the world’s leading ski destinations. Data collected by the Breckenridge Tourism Office shows that visitors name parking and traffic more than any other problem. Parking is a problem, and traffic is a problem. It’s foolish to ignore this.

The town council deserves applause for its efforts to confront these problems. The council assembled a citizens’ task force and accepted almost all of its recommendations. It also engaged parking and traffic consultants for their expertise. While we don’t yet have final answers, one thing is clear: Any meaningful improvements will take a lot of money.

To raise the money, the council proposed a broad lift-ticket tax. Negotiations that followed produced an agreement with Vail Resorts by which the resort has guaranteed a minimum of $3.5 million per year for the town’s use for parking and traffic improvements. A provision limits the lift-ticket tax, so it will not affect local season pass holders. This important agreement, which council supports unanimously, requires voter approval with a “yes” vote on 2A.

Breckenridge residents value community and preserving the town’s unique character. The town thrives because all of us care about it. We roll up our sleeves and make it work.

Help confront our parking and traffic challenges and make it work. Give the town council our approval: vote “yes” on 2A.
