Burke: Please vote yes on Breckenridge 2A (letter)

Please vote yes on Breckenridge 2A

I am writing this letter to confirm what our citizens already know, that we are at a critical tipping point regarding improved transit and parking and we have a comprehensive plan that has been significantly vetted and debated over the last year with a community task force, community forums, coffee talks and hours and hours of discussions during our town council work sessions and meetings. And, we now have been able to secure the needed funding to accomplish our original goals through a negotiated agreement with Vail Resorts. The negotiations went on for months and were not easy or perfect, but we ended in a good place that is fair to all and accomplishes the original goals that our town council heard loud and clear from our citizen’s advisory group and our community at large. But, we are not finished yet!

This negotiated deal is finalized only if our Breckenridge citizens vote yes on 2A.

A yes vote on 2A includes some of the following highlights: This tax does not impact local pass holders, it guarantees a minimun $3.5 million payment to the town of Breckenridge from Vail Resorts and guarantees an annual increase of 1-4% on the $3.5 million based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI). These dollars will be dedicated to transit and parking improvements, Vail Resorts has agreed not to oppose or campaign, against this ballot initiative. Vail Resorts acknowledges that parking and transit are an issue for our community and commits to working with us as we implement this comprehensive plan. The ski area agreed to continue to provide transit services at, or above its current level of service. And, this ballot initiative, once passed leaves the decisions of parking and transit in the hands of our community, and not in the hands of a corporation that has appropriately different objectives and values than our citizens and town council.

We have a council that has stood strong and unanimous; and, most importantly, we had you our community stand with us, and for that, I thank you and ask you to see this through with us and vote yes on 2A.
