Every: Whole Foods not a necessary addition to Summit

Who needs Whole Foods?

It’s called “Whole Paycheck” for a reason: Whole Foods is rapidly becoming the natural foods player in the Starbucks- and Walmart-ization of our culture … Yes, this behemoth may bring jobs and revenue to Frisco and Summit, but at what cost? Another expensive store out of reach to more than half of Summit residents? And now the town council wants to throw them some pretty generous perks?

Summit already has a decent natural/organic food store: Natural Grocer/Vitamin Cottage is a family-run, home-grown-in-Colorado, long-established small chain, which features local and regional fresh produce, and affordable prices for quality food products, just a few miles down the dam road or highway from the Frisco exit. It would be great to see our residents and visitors give them more business, instead of watching while the outsized Whole Foods comes in to cannibalize everything within a 20-mile radius.

The towns and county should be putting resources into maintaining the quality of life for our small communities — not into huge tax breaks and other gifts to large corporations whose presence will overshadow and forever alter our mountain-town ambience. Whole Foods shouldn’t come to Frisco — but if the people decide that it will, it should pay fair market value for what it wants from us.
