Alvin Goldman (letter to the editor, Feb. 27, Summit Daily News) is correct as far he goes.

Conservatism also includes how the U.S. Constitution was designed to operate. Our representatives in government believe that technological advances have rendered our constitution obsolete. They have led our nation toward an administrative form of government that prescribes our every day activities, requires a permit for us to deviate and is accountable to no one. They have established bureaucracies that require us to comply with a growing list of regulations and mandates, which consequently cause the people to become dependent upon the government for food, shelter, safety, diet, initiative, health care and child care using public funds outside the scope of the constitution.

Modern Conservatives want to return the government to its original intent: the legislative branch makes laws, the executive branch executes them, and the judicial branch adjudicates. That system contains checks and balances proceeding with the consent of the governed. It worked well for the first hundred years but has been deteriorating ever since.
