Jakob: Our wasteful water ways (letter)

Come on guys, are you serious about there being a water shortage along the Colorado River?

Having stayed in Vail and Breckenridge for a number of years, it never ceases to amaze me that showers and taps throw out water like a dam spillway. When this is addressed and real reforms, like charging more for water so that people choose to use less (it works!), then the argument about a “shortage” will have credibility. Until then the cries appear to be more like sabre rattling from folk who do not want to change (old) existing habits.

While we are at it, how about Breck and Vail also introduce waste recycling for condominiums. Separate bins? Not that hard. Works in other places in the world as well.

Keeping up “clean” credentials is tough. Sure it costs, but then compared to the amount of money wasted in the political process looking after the places we all live represent a minor cost for the wonderful benefits we all enjoy.

Maybe next visit things will be different. I live in hope.

M. Jakob
