Kirk: Summit County must take charge of telcommunications (letter)

In his letter of Oct. 7, Dr. John Hillman asked: “Are you tired of not having cell service in the Lower Blue River Valley? Are you tired of AT&T repeatedly backing out of its promise to build a cell tower north of Silverthorne?”

He directed everyone to to to sign a letter to Congressman Polis, asking him to help us establish cell-phone service for the sake of public safety. We thank him for his efforts, and we agree that the next step — in addition to signing the online letter — should be enlisting our public officials to intervene with AT&T.

But we need more.

While continuing our efforts with AT&T, we need a Plan B. After all, AT&T has — twice — completely backed out of shovel-ready plans to build our tower. Their behavior has been like Lucy (of Charlie Brown fame) holding the football.

For the past few years, they have encouraged us to come running to kick the football, only to whisk it away, at the last minute, allowing us to fall flat on the ground. Can we really believe, given our experience, that AT&T will reverse its decision to cancel plans for the Lower Blue cell tower?

It is time to open negotiations with another tower company, and it is time for our government to take the lead in this most important public-safety issue. Summit County has expressed a willingness to take that lead — but, according to Colorado law, it is illegal for them to be involved in telecommunications, including cell service.

The citizens of Summit County have the ability to undo the state law by voting “Yes” on County Question 1A. Soon, if you are a registered voter, you will receive, a mail-in ballot.

Vote “Yes” on 1A!
