Kromholz: Fear-mongering and deception (letter)

This is in response to “An exchange of ideas” by Kim McGahey, Summit Republican Party chairman’s letter on Friday, August 28. I wasn’t there at the bank when you were “harassed” by a local blind liberal, but I would like to clarify some generalized statements you made in your letter:

Yes, the Dow lost about 2,000 points from when the market closed on Monday, August 17 to the close on Tuesday, August 25. But then, it gained 1,000 points two days later. There is a lot of volatility in the markets of late but don’t forget the Dow has doubled from when Obama took office to the close on Monday, August 31, 2015.

You mentioned our economy has had a “flat tire” for 7 years, when actually the economy has been flat for 14 1/2 years during both George W. Bush’s and Obama’s terms, each averaging about 2-percent growth. But, let’s look over the longer term: Since Truman’s second term to the end of Obama’s first term, Democrats have produced an annualized GNP of 4.4 percent compared to the Republicans return of only 2.5 percent. Since Obama took office, 12.8 million jobs have been created, and there have been 64 straight months of private-sector growth. Also when he took office, the unemployment rate was 9 percent — it is now 5.5 percent. It’s a fact that Democrats create more jobs and economic growth than Republicans. And yes, I do agree with you that something must be done about the national debt.

You go on to say reporters give Obama a free pass. I guess you’ve never watched FOX News or read Charles Krauthammer, George Will, etc.

I believe an exchange of conflicting ideas in the public square is only honorable when there is no fear-mongering and deception. I’m sure our Founding Fathers would agree with that.
