Letter to the editor: Let’s remember why we all came to Summit County

Julia Koster

It’s 1990: You graduated from college and jumped in the car to head west. As you drive into Colorado, the Rocky Mountains gradually appear in the distance with snowcapped peaks and the elusive mountain lifestyle you’ve set out to explore.

As you exit your rickety 1985 Honda, you slam the door shut and the mirror falls off. But you don’t care, because before you is the breathtaking panorama of the Tenmile Range.

You don’t know it yet, but summer here is why you will decide to stay forever. You came to ski, to work on the mountain and make some friends. That one season turned into another, then another and now here we are — 30 years later.

Summit County is a far cry from what it was when you arrived. But you built it this way, and you wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Together, with your old ski buddies from those post-college years, when your parents wondered if you would ever amount to anything, you created a life. You built this county into what it is.

Summit County is the kind of place where we say, “Come for the winter, and stay for the summer.” And for that reason, we don our brightest smiles and cheeriest greetings each day to welcome visitors from all around the country. (Yes, including Texas. Don’t be rude, just mind your business in the roundabouts, people.)

We are unbelievably lucky to call this place home. But even better than luck, we’ve got grit. We’ve got the mountain work ethic. And a great sense of humor.

So rather than choose who can or cannot come to visit us, let’s keep the door open. And remember why we all came here. Because as it turns out, we were once tourists, too.
