Letter to the editor: Thanks, apologies and hope for the future in Summit County

Alex "Kayla Rose" Kiburas

First, as a Summit County native, I want to express my gratitude for being able to call such an amazing place my home. Aside from the obvious perks of stunning scenery and the endless supply of recreational opportunities, the people are also what make this place great. Many of them have shown me they are willing to go above and beyond to serve the community and help those in need, something I personally have been failing to do in recent years.

I have struggled with alcoholism and drug addiction for almost 20 years and have done many things I am not proud of, burning plenty of bridges along the way. The past few years have been especially difficult, not only due to the pandemic but also because of issues with gender identity. I would like to formally apologize to the local community for my erratic, selfish and destructive behavior, to my former employers and co-workers for being a nightmare to work with and quitting with little to no notice, and to the transgender community for giving people reason to doubt our legitimacy.

While I still have many issues to overcome, I am now almost two months clean and sober and working hard to rebuild bridges and get my life back on track. Mental health, addiction and gender identity are all serious issues, and the people who suffer from them need all the support they can get. I want to offer any help I can to anyone in need as a way to make amends and support our community, because this is my home, and we are all in this together.
