Letter to the editor: You are blessed if you have money and a roof over your head

Linda A. Perrotti

When the student is ready, the teacher will appear. I made a decision to count my blessings and eliminate my burdens. Some people make the world better by being in it. Let it be you!

I think one of the easiest traps we fall into is taking blessings for granted. We are so blessed in so many ways, and yet we often just assume we have a right to it. We often forget that most of the world is barely struggling to survive.

Let me just put this into perspective: According to the International Programs Center U.S. Census Bureau, the total population of the world in summer 2020 was 7.8 billion. And if you have food in your refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof overhead and a bed to sleep in, you are richer than 4.7 million people in the world. You are in the top 25%. You are blessed!

If you have any money in the bank, some money in your wallet or just some spare change in a jar, you are richer than 5.8 billion people in the world. You are among the top 8% of the world’s wealthy. You are blessed!

If you have never experienced the danger of battle, the loneliness of imprisonment, the agony of torture or the pangs of starvation, you are better off than 500 million people in our world today who have experienced those things. You are blessed!

If you can attend a worship service without the fear of harassment, arrest, torture or death, you are more blessed than 3 billion people on this planet. That is illegal for 3 billion people somewhere in the world. You are blessed!

We forget how blessed we are.
