Opinion from Jenkins: Breckenridge Town Council healthcare a shameful handout

Breck council should decline healthcare

Well, the Breckenridge Town Council is at it again. I guess it wasn’t enough to give themselves a hefty pay raise recently; now they want free health insurance, too! Yes, I understand that $28 per month isn’t exactly free, but it might as well be compared to what most of us pay. Throughout the country, in both the private and the public sectors, employees are being asked to contribute more for their health insurance, not less. Our esteemed council members must think they’re special. And what makes it so much worse is that they serve just part-time at what has been historically a volunteer position. They all have paid day jobs, which is where they should look for their health coverage, and not grease their own palms buy pushing through health care coverage on the backs of their constituents. They should be embarrassed for even having the thought that taxpayers should pay their bills. I think the citizens of Breckenridge should call for the immediate removal from office of those self-interested council members who want to implement this inappropriate waste of tax dollars. It is time the council stop thinking about themselves and start thinking about the job of improving our community.
