Breckenridge Tourism Office supports lift-ticket tax (letter)

On behalf of the following members of the Breckenridge Tourism Office Board of Directors, we support 2A, and encourage all people to vote: Richard Sosville, Rob Neyland, Jeff Cospolich, Wendy Wolfe, Dick Carleton, Steve Lapinsohn, Bruce Horii and Ginny Vietti.

2A is a significant issue before Breckenridge voters in terms of smart, sustainable growth for our business community. 2A is the proposed long-term funding mechanism to provide for much-needed parking and transit improvements in our town.

While so many aspects of the Breckenridge experience are viewed favorably in guest surveys, parking has historically and consistently been our most significant negative guest experience.

• In winter ‘13-‘14 and ‘14-‘15, surveys uncovered more guests inclined to openly criticize Breckenridge parking than those who would recommend it.

• In summer, parking had positive ratings, but remains the lowest-ranked survey point. Most concerning, parking satisfaction ratings declined significantly in each of the last three summers.

• Of the guests who commented on a negative Breckenridge experience, two thirds addressed parking:

“main deterrent to coming to Breckenridge is they don’t want to deal with parking”

“no parking to eat or shop”

“More difficult to park than downtown Chicago”

“parking was horrible, drove around for an hour, for someone who is not from here it was very difficult”

“all parking lots were full, the free parking lot had hundreds of people waiting for the free shuttle, so we gave up skiing for the day”

• Seasonal residents rank parking even lower than our guests do.

A yes on 2A approves a sales tax on Breckenridge Ski Resort lift tickets – not season passes – beginning January 2016. This ongoing revenue stream would fund an improved transit system, a critical component of the parking solution. Long-term improved parking and transit solutions are integral to meeting guest expectations, garnering repeat business and guest loyalty, and improving quality of life for our local community.

Please exercise your right to vote. The BTO Board of Directors, as listed above, believes a YES vote on 2A is a YES vote for our guests and for our full-time and seasonal residents.
