Charlwood: Pitbulls are a problem in Summit County

I am saddened after reading about the pitbull attack/shooting incident at the cycling event this past week. When are people going to say enough is enough? I realize that these dogs can be wonderful family companions, but maybe their owners need to understand their breeding history and potential for aggression before bringing them out to public events. Last week at the Breckenridge farmers market, a pitbull attacked a husky for no reason. The two dogs were just passing each other. The husky laid there and loudly howled in pain for like 5 minutes while everyone watched. Earlier this summer, a friend’s dog was mauled to the point of near death while walking her dog on a leash in her own neighborhood. The victim barely survived after taking about 5 people to pull the pitbull off of it’s prey. This is a serious problem, and it seems like people up here kind of look the other way due to our communal love of dogs. What will everybody think when one day it is a child being attacked, or anyone for that matter. I am not sure what the answer is, but it is becoming more common and it is definitely something for this community to think about since we cannot leave it up to individual owners to honestly evaluate their dog’s behavior and breeding.
