Downie: Colorado needs a safer and cleaner fuel source (letter)

This week, the Summit Daily published an article discussing how common it is for oil field workers to die from inhaling toxic fumes and how outdated the technology and regulations are that should be preventing this from happening. As a Colorado citizen, it does not sit well with me knowing that young people are dying to produce the energy and fuel I use.

Working in oil fields is a very dangerous job. According to an NPR report, 138 workers were killed while at work in 2012, and this number is on the rise. While the Summit Daily article discussed the possibility of using expensive technologies to make oil field work safer or trying to change regulations to protect workers, I believe it would make more sense to put our time and energy into searching for a better source of fuel and energy.

Renewable technologies such as solar panels and wind energy offer a much safer alternative to petroleum, not to mention their environmental benefits. Renewable energy also has many economic benefits. Sustainable technology can save individuals and business an incredible amount of money. Additionally, the production and installation of sustainable technology opens up a huge new job market. According to CNN, 35,000 solar jobs were added to the market in 2015, while oil and coal slashed 17,000.

I do not believe I am alone when I say it makes me uncomfortable knowing how dangerous it is to produce the oil and gas I use every day. It would seem that with all the dangers associated with petroleum, people would welcome a safer alternative.
