Doyle: Rotary contest should measure ice melt, not a clumsy barrell
Dear Rotarians, I know the barrel falling over is not your fault. I would also point out I had a ticket guess submitted for both the 6th and the 7th. But I do not want to win a “Barrel Tips Over” contest.
In the spirit of the real contest, I think Rotary absolutely must come up with a better solution rather than just saying the contest is over. The contest is not “when the barrel tips over” but when the ice melts….
Put rotary members to work from dawn to dusk. Go and spot the device at least every hour between now and ice melt. Maybe even put the Denver Water guard shack guys to work, keeping two separate charts. Combine those results and come up with an average of the most accurate record you can. When the barrel is really in the water, use that as the real time.
Maybe even split with the “fake” winner from the 6th or the 7th. But do not change the contest to “Barrel Tips Over.” I will be less than interested in ever buying tickets again in that kind of a contest.
