Girvin: Breckenridge voters must support a comprehensive transit plan (letter)
The people of Breckenridge have the opportunity to seize the future of transit and address critically-important, quality-of-life issues of parking, traffic management and transportation systems with a “Yes” vote on 2A. This issue is now in the hands of the voters because without a “Yes” vote, all of the hard work of the Breckenridge Town Council and Vail Resorts to negotiate a friendly resolution will be for naught.
I am pleased that the town of Breckenridge and Vail Resorts were able to negotiate a good agreement that recognizes that support for long-term transportation and parking solutions are in the best interest of the entire Breckenridge community. The tax revenue generated by 2A will be dedicated solely to solving the problems of traffic, parking and congestion through a comprehensive plan that will improve the guest experience, provide more frequent transit service, expand parking, offer more convenient employee parking and make it easier to move around Breckenridge.
This is not just about a parking structure; Breckenridge’s plan is more far-seeing and comprehensive than a single parking structure. What helps solve parking problems is comprehensive transit planning, which takes people out of their vehicles into easily-used public transit options and walkable communities. While you might not ever park in the proposed F-Lot parking garage, you may very well use the free buses or expanded employee parking options that are part of the overall transit plan.
We can’t lose this moment to shape the future of Breckenridge. Please vote “Yes” on 2A and secure the future of transit and quality of life in Breckenridge.
