Howell: Frisco barbecue festival is no ‘pig-eating orgy’

Bring on the BBQ

The Frisco barbecue festival is next weekend, and a good time will be had by thousands of locals and visitors. That seems to displease Seth Ridgeway of Frisco. I don’t know for sure, but maybe one of the side dishes will be tough cookies.

It’s hard to know where to start with Ridgeway’s misconceptions. Let’s begin with pig flesh being filthy food. It’s not, and hasn’t been since the advent of modern food safety technology. It was unsafe until then, and may be a logical reason it was banned in the Old Testament dietary laws. I know of no such prohibition in the New Testament. As for the “pig-eating orgy” referenced by Ridgeway, I am unaware of it. Maybe Telluride has one?

Ridgeway refers to over 3 billion people starving. Certainly the world has a hunger problem, but is the problem supply of food or something else? Show me a country that has a high degree of civil rights and political liberties that has a starvation problem, and I’ll buy you a four-rib plate next weekend. Want to end starvation? End authoritarian governments, by whatever means necessary.

Ridgeway demands that those who want to eat “filthy” pig flesh do it in the privacy of their own homes. I suggest to Ridgeway that if he doesn’t like the Frisco barbecue festival that he should stay in the privacy of his own home during it, or maybe go take a long walk in the lovely countryside that Summit County has to offer. I hope everyone enjoys the festival. I wish I could make it this year.
