Not on board with discourteous daredevils (letter)

This longboarding article is disturbing. While some of the boarders who stand on their boards (excuse my ignorance of the nuances) seem safe enough, we still give them a wide berth. However, the longboarders who are lying on their backs, feet first, show no common courtesy, not to mention any semblance of safety for themselves much less others. I’ve witnessed near accidents and they’ve flown by me and my riding partner going about 50 mph without so much as a word. No “on your left” or “coming through” and certainly no slowing down for anyone. All with no brakes. I feel that conveyances such as theirs with no brakes should be banned from the path before someone is seriously injured or killed by their recklessness.

I called the sheriff after one such Saturday where I felt it was a miracle no one was injured by this one particular young man’s speed demon daredevil actions. The officer told me to call when it was actually happening, as though they would ever be able to catch the guy! There needs to be some enforcement of rec path ordinances, at the very least on weekends. It would also be helpful if bike rental companies would counsel their renters to move all the way off the pavement when they stop, as this seems to be the most common violation of guest users. I know, it seems like common sense….
