Schnobrich: Town of Breckenridge and Vail Resorts joined at the hip (letter)
I attended the Breckenridge town council meeting Tuesday evening. I came to the meeting frustrated with the Vail Resorts corporation for bullying my town and frustrated with town leadership for thinking a simple solution to a problem was more taxes. When two parties begin airing their differences in public, the odds of finding mutually agreeable solutions are low. The town council and Vail Resorts defied those odds. I commend them both.
The town of Breckenridge and Vail Resorts are joined at the hip. A deal in which one side wins all and the other loses would have caused long-term paralysis. This agreement is not perfect, but it’s sustainable, it works. The town is getting less tax revenue by restricting the tax to the winter ski season and will not tax season ticket holders. Vail in turn is guaranteeing a minimum of $3.5 million annually in tax revenue, reducing the financial risk to the town. All threats and finger pointing have ended.
With our “yes” vote on November 3, the town can begin moving forward with sound solutions to our traffic, transit and parking issues. Hats off to both parties!
