The dark side of longboarding (letter)
I was very disappointed that two articles were published exalting longboarding on the bike paths within the county.
Being an avid bike rider using these bike paths, I have seen many close calls between long boarders and users (myself) of the paths. What should have been included in the article is that long boarders have no brakes, and their only means of stopping is dragging their feet for tens of yards before they can stop.
It is bad enough our bike paths have different levels of ability for riders and collisions due occur; but, include a missile descending at high rates of speed without a braking system, a serious accident will eventually happen. Families with children use these paths, and I feel as you publish these types of articles that you (i.e., SDN) will encourage more people to attempt this sport, and the potential for a serious child injury is high. Please be responsible in what you publish, as both sides of the story should be included!
There is a dark side to longboarding, and it is only a matter of time before a longboarding accident will make front page news for all the wrong reasons.
