Withers: Breckenridge mayor off target on gun views
Mayor’s off target
After reading Breckenridge Mayor John Warner’s glowing endorsement of Millie Hamner’s radical efforts to restrict gun ownership rights it reminded me of Hugo Chavez’s frequent endorsements of Fidel Castro. It seems that players in the political fringe can’t avoid the temptation of mutual admiration. Warner’s tale of his experience with gun violence highlights the fallacy of trying to restrict the rights of everyone in the false hope that criminals will then magically begin to obey laws. While I respect Warner’s right and choice to be untrained, unprepared and afraid when confronted by criminals, I do not think his approach should be required of everyone. Many in the silent majority of responsible citizens may choose to obtain training and equip themselves to address such threats, no matter how rare. Perhaps Warner’s gravely injured friend might have been spared had John exchanged frailty with some degree of preparation and self-reliance. On a more pleasant note, there is little doubt that Hamner will be replaced at the next election now that voters are fully aware of her attack on the constitutional rights of her constituents, not to mention her wild tax-and-spend addiction. Likewise, Warner’s failed effort as Breckenridge mayor will soon be ditched by term limits. What a relief, we will soon be able to move forward.
