No on Ref. A

When it’s all said and done, Summit County and its four main towns will state formally their opposition to the water-grabbing Referendum A question on the Nov. 4 ballot.

We applaud the desire to speak in unanimity. We need everybody on the Western Slope to understand that Referendum A only means trouble for us and to vote against it.

It will take a huge effort to overcome voters on the Front Range, who almost surely will fall for any plan they think will allow unfettered growth and water-sucking landscaping inappropriate for a High Plains desert.

Referendum A asks voters to approve borrowing authority for $2 billion to fund water projects. Nobody knows what these projects are.

We think Referendum A is a target at Western Slope water for diversion to the Front Range. Summit and Grand counties are already the most diverted counties in Colorado. There’s almost nothing left except in the wettest of the wettest years.

Even without Referendum A, we worry about the day Denver Water, which owns Dillon Reservoir and most of the local water rights, decides it needs all of its Summit County water.

Referendum A is unique in that it unites all of the Western Slope, Republican and Democrat. Nobody trusts assurances from Gov. Bill Owens when he says the measure isn’t a water grab. While some do believe the governor, nobody trusts the unknown governor who will be elected in 2006.

Referendum A needs to be drowned in a sea of no votes.
