The NBA brings down basketball

If you like the game of basketball, you have to agree the National Basketball League game is a poor product. The acronym NBA better stands for “Not a Basketball League.”To say that breaks our hearts because the game is a wonderful one, when it’s played with passion and teamwork – and with great individual play. We’re big fans. The Detroit Pistons-Indiana Pacers brawl Friday night that went from the court into the stands only highlights how bad the game has gotten, in every respect. As of the moment, people are appalled at the brawl and the behavior of the volcanic Pacer Ron Artest. NBA commissioner David Stern’s yearlong suspension of Artest is a strong message, but only the beginning of the work he has to do.The game on the floor is an even bigger problem. Most NBA regular season games aren’t worth watching until – maybe – the fourth quarter.Throughout, the game has degenerated into little more than one-on-one bump and grinds. The acrobatic slam dunk is more prized than fundamental basketball that wins games. The 2004 Olympic Dream Team’s collapse against international competition showed just how bad the NBA game has become. It was a proper comeuppance. As long as we’re talking sports, here’s more:We’re equally unhappy with the game of professional tennis. The advent of big racquets and 160-mph serves has destroyed any sort of strategy that once pervaded the game. Now, it’s all baseline bashing.Anybody around to watch the Wimbledon and U.S. Open matches of the 1980s knows what we’re talking about.Today, those premier tournaments are hardly the must-see TV they once were. The equipment has ruined the game.
