Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down

Thumbs up, Thumbs down is a short take on events or issues that we find agreeable and not so agreeable.

Thumbs up:

To Gov. Bill Owens for instituting a ban on fireworks and open fires on state lands. While this might mean we won’t have fireworks in Summit County this July Fourth, it does mean we have a better sense of security and safety. We are smart people here in Summit County, finding alternative ways to celebrate Independence Day should be easy.

Thumbs up:

To Gary Miller, Chihuahua landowner, and Summit County commissioners for continuing to work on a plan to keep the 43-acre site near Montezuma clear and free of development. There are appropriate places to develop housing in Summit County and Chihuahua isn’t one of them.

Thumbs down:

To the Colorado Avalanche for taking away relatively free entertainment to thousands of fans – especially those right here in Summit County – by folding in Game 7. By the way, it was recorded as the worst Game 7 loss in NHL playoff history.

Thumbs down:

To India and Pakistan. Both countries are in the middle of a virtual nuclear war, attempting to puff out their chests to see who will flinch first. This thumbs down also goes to the U.S. for a lackluster attempt at negotiating with the two countries.

Thumbs up:

To the U.S. Forest Service for finally releasing the White River National Forest Plan.

Thumbs down:

To the U.S. Forest Service for not handing out energy-awake pills with the nearly 1,000-page document. Happy reading.
