To our readers, print and web

EDITORIAL

Our dedicated and ever-growing numbers of web readers are beginning to notice a new feature to http://www.summitdaily.com. As readers view each story, they can write comments, both to us and to other readers. Readers also can log comments to our weekly website poll question. We are still working out a lot of bugs in the program and we’ve tried to start out with an unannounced “soft” opening, a trick of the restaurant industry. Please forgive the inevitable glitches, and as some readers have done, tell us what happened. Some early eagle eyes who have figured out the system are noticing their comments are not posted immediately. That’s because we have to edit them, just as we do letters to the editor. The Summit Daily News readers have come to enjoy a robust letters to the editor section that has fostered many community conversations.Recently, we’ve only just finished fighting out the November 2004 presidential election and have moved on to smoke shacks and the independent study program in the schools for competitive skiers and snowboarders. We think our letters reflect a highly engaged and dynamic community. This is one reason why it’s so much fun to give our readers a daily paper both in print and on the web, even when they have to spank us sometimes for a mistake or misjudgment. The comments section on our web edition is one more way we can help readers talk to each other, and us. The comments can be anonymous, unlike in the print editions, but readers are encouraged to register their names. As always, readers can submit signed letters for publication through our website. That continues. So, dear, passionate, cherished Summit Daily readers, have at it. We hope the community conversations and the ever-present battle for the soul of the summit rages on with us in the middle.

As a Summit Daily News reader, you make our work possible.

Summit Daily is embarking on a multiyear project to digitize its archives going back to 1989 and make them available to the public in partnership with the Colorado Historic Newspapers Collection. The full project is expected to cost about $165,000. All donations made in 2023 will go directly toward this project.

Every contribution, no matter the size, will make a difference.
