Water sense

It turns out many Front Range people, many who are our frequent visitors or part-time homeowners, are in front of the water conservation issue.Water consumption in the metro Denver area last year registered at 1969 levels in the face of a 65 percent population growth since that time.We must thank our Front Range neighbors and implore them to hold the line. Should the drought ease with a big snow year, if we are so lucky, this new grassroots water-use ethic must be maintained. One reason is that one good snow year does not end a long-term drought, such as we’re experiencing. The other is that it will take a new water-use ethic here in the Arid West to help make sure the liquid gold remains in sufficient quantities to serve inevitable growth.Front Range water utilities, the biggest being Denver Water, which owns Dillon Reservoir, must institutionalize this new ethic as the right way to live in the Arid West and to take care of future customers.Meanwhile, Denver Water is negotiating with Summit County governmental officials on a plan to increase diversions from Dillon Reservoir from about 63,000 acre-feet a year to 131,000 acre-feet of firm yield. This is what the water wars are about these days. The pressure is on to take more water across the Continental Divide. Fortunately, the people are proving to be a moderating force in their water-use habits, and we appreciate their leadership.
