Whoa on Wolcott

Water planners are touting the benefits of a new reservoir planned for the 4 Eagle Ranch at Wolcott in Eagle County. They say the 100,000 acre-foot reservoir will help Denver Water while taking care of the Western Slope. We in Summit County should be watching this closely. While we are part of the Western Slope, the new reservoir might not be in our best interests if it allows Denver Water to take more from Dillon Reservoir.Frisco town officials getting ready to enter the marina business should really be paying attention. As far as Denver Water is thinking, one of the reasons it would go for the Wolcott deal is to take more water from Dillon through the Roberts Tunnel and on across the Continental Divide. There, it can fuel more unfettered Front Range growth and be sold to Baja Denver where subdivision after subdivision are draining aquifers at unsustainable rates. The Western Slope is hardly monolithic when it comes to water issues. Headwater counties such as Summit and Grand, the two most heavily water-diverted counties in the state, differ in needs from our western cousins that benefit as much from our water-producing snows as does Denver.Basically, Wolcott presents problems for all areas lying east of it that rely on the headwater counties’ flows to keep water in the Colorado River and its tributaries.Much has to be worked out before Wolcott becomes a reality. As well, we still await how the Summit County commissioners and others answer a separate Denver Water proposal that would allow it to almost double what it currently takes from the Blue River Basin. The two proposals are trouble for Summit County.
