Why the Summit Daily did not carry final election results Wednesday

As the whole world got to see Wednesday, the Summit Daily News had to go to press earlier in the morning without final Summit County election results.

Believe me, it hurt us as much as it disappointed readers.

Up until this year, the Summit Daily could have held until Kingdom Come, or at least until the final Summit County tally was completed – around 2:30 a.m., as it turned out.

What’s changed is the Daily News no longer has its own press in the back of the building at our Frisco office. We are now printed in Gypsum on parent Colorado Mountain News Media’s brand-spanking-new and very expensive high-tech press.

The new press is a big improvement over what we had in terms of print quality and color capability.

It is still being fine-tuned to its designed standards of perfection, by the way.

The only downfall of the new arrangement is, on election nights, when we can’t be as flexible as we once were.

We are part of a tight press schedule that puts us in line with three other sister dailies, the Vail Daily, Glenwood Post-Independent and Aspen Times.

All four papers were balancing blown deadlines and finalizing coverage of the election.

Here at the Summit Daily, I made the call about 1 a.m. to go with what we had. It did not appear, at the time, that ballot counting would finish soon enough for us to still be a morning paper.

That’s what happened. For those we disappointed, we’re sorry. We thank everybody for their patience and hope readers enjoy today’s news report.
