$0.02: Plummer must equal Titanic performance
I wonder which Broncos team will show up this weekend against Indianapolis, with the season on the line. Or, perhaps a better question is which Jake Plummer will show up.As it’s looked lately, nobody more than No. 16 is responsible for how Denver fares. If Plummer plays like he did in the three weeks before the Titanic Christmas Day win over Tennessee, during which time he threw one touchdown pass and eight interceptions, the Broncos might as well confirm their post-Sunday vacation plans. On the other hand, if the Plummer who threw for 303 yards and two TDs against the Titans shows up, Denver more than likely will be headed to the playoffs. It’s on his shoulders …What a sad, sad day Sunday was, with the passing of Reggie White, a role model’s role model. It always baffles me how a guy like him can die young, while other, evil characters go on living into old age. I’m sure there’s a higher purpose for people like White, but it’s a shame he had to be taken away so soon …
Sticking with the joke that never gets old, isn’t it ironic that mediocrity suddenly isn’t good enough for the Denver Nuggets? For years mediocrity would’ve been a season for the ages! Now, 13-15 isn’t even enough to keep Jeff Bzdelik on the payroll. On another note, the firing of the coach Bzdelik brings to fruition a first that I didn’t think would happen. With Michael Cooper being named interim head coach, we have our first WNBA-to-NBA head coaching path. (Cooper, you’ll recall, led the Los Angeles Sparks to a pair of WNBA titles.) In some capacity, this is a victory for all of women’s basketball, because it shows an apprenticeship with the girls is just as good as one with the boys …
Some NFL stats for thought: Michael Vick averages more yards per rushing attempt (7.6) than he does per passing attempt (7.25) … Colts tailback Edgerrin James is the AFC’s leading rusher, with 1,550 yards. This strikes me as crazy because of everything Peyton Manning has done for that team at quarterback. Imagine, the conference’s leading rusher is a role player on his own team … Shawn Alexander of Seattle is the only guy with more rushing yards than James (1,616), and leads the NFL with 19 touchdowns to boot. Is there a better shield to exposure than playing in America’s northwestern-most major city? … All three Pro Bowl quarterbacks selected from the NFC are black (Donovan McNabb, Daunte Culpepper and Vick), while all three AFC QBs are white (Peyton Manning, Tom Brady and Drew Brees) …Everyone’s trying to compare Peyton Manning’s 2004 with Dan Marino’s 1984. They’re basically even in my opinion, except for one point: Marino’s 48-touchdown season came in his second year in the NFL, and he led the Dolphins to the Super Bowl. Considering how much today’s young quarterbacks struggle, that’s a remarkable feat …Is there a better measuring stick for Lance Armstrong’s achievements than him being named the Associated Press’ male athlete of the year for a third straight time this week? The AP screwed up in 1999 by giving the award to Tiger Woods instead of Armstrong, even though it was the year he won his first Tour de France after beating cancer, but the three-peat is still pretty cool …
In parting, I think it’s important we draw a line between skiing exploits that are difficult and cool, and skiing exploits that are difficult and dumb. For example, skiing backward through a mogul field – which I saw someone doing last weekend – falls in the latter category.
