9 unearned runs doom Tigers

ENGLEWOOD – It’s hard to win a baseball game when you make eight errors, a fact that the Summit High School nine proved true on Wednesday in an 11-4 loss at Englewood.Sophomore hurler Jordan Sitkoski tossed a complete game in defeat for Summit, allowing just two earned runs. But his teammates were unable to make the plays when they had to, and so Sitkoski and the Tigers dropped to 1-10 overall, 0-5 in the 4A Jeffco League.”Really, I was proud of of him,” SHS co-coach Jeff Jackson said. “It’s unfortunate that we can’t protect our pitcher like we should.”Junior Scott Campbell went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs to spark Summit’s offense, but he was the only Tiger with multiple hits. This game, nevertheless, was decided when Summit was in the field. While relating the eight official miscues, Jackson noted, “And that’s just the basic errors, not the ‘Oh, I didn’t get to the ball in time’ stuff. We misread a lot of fly balls in the outfield.”Englewood improved to 6-7 overall and won its first league game to improve to 1-2 in those contests. However, the Pirates were “nothing special by any means,” Jackson said.”They capitalized on all our mistakes and that’s why we lost.”The Tigers did manage to put together enough players to play a JV game Wednesday, their first of the season. They won 10-8.”We’re undefeated,” Jackson said afterward.Devon O’Neil can be contacted at (970) 668-4633, or at doneil@summitdaily.com.
