A-Basin Swiss-Am team clinches RMD title

LOVELAND – The Arapahoe-Basin based Swiss-Am Masters ski team clinched the overall Rocky Mountain Division alpine title last weekend at Loveland after it stretched its lead over second-place Loveland to 931 points.

Breckenridge residents Vicky Valar, Patty O’Brien and Doug Briggs led the way for the A-Basin team. Valar won the overall, women’s class 5 slalom, super-G and downhill titles, and took second in the GS. Valar also won the Wolf Cup downhill and the Schaller Challenge Cup slalom and GS awards.

O’Brien won all four disciplines in class 7, while the former U.S. Ski Team speed squad member Briggs won the class 5 men’s super-G and downhill titles.More than 100 racers participated in the season’s lineup of 24 races, equally divided between slalom, giant slalom, super-G and downhill.

Other A-Basin team members include Carlos Conti, Mike Mestek, Tom Ravin, Hans Wolf, Jerry Sorensen, Chip Ford, Tom Hodel, Fred Marks, Graham Smith, Krzysz Kaminski, Erik Klemme, Don Johnson, Alan Beyer, Nancy Kelley, Mark Granger, Anne Gibson, Tom Ripp, Jacel Bierlarczyk, Morgan Nields and John Whitesel.

The U.S. Masters Nationals take place next week at Big Sky, Mont. Swiss-Am coach Ron Emery will take seven racers to the competition.
