Gregg Treinish and Deia Schlosberg are about to embark on the hike of a lifetime. On June 30, the Leadville couple will arrive by plane in Quito, Ecuador. From there, they plan to walk to Tierra del Fuego, then up the eastern coast of South America, across the Amazon River basin and back to Quito. Estimated travel time – one year.Treinish and Schlosberg, both former wilderness instructors at the Trailhead Wilderness School in Georgetown, plan to spend time in remote villages along their way. “It’s not as much about the end-to-end completion, as if we were hiking the Appalachian Trail,” Treinish said. “It’s more about the journey and the chance to explore different cultures. So few people get a chance to see what’s really out there.””One of our goals is to interact with people who are living sustainably,” Schlosberg said. “I’ve been an environmental ed instructor in the past and worked with sustainable development, but I’ve never fully experienced it firsthand. I want to learn from people who have been doing it for generations.”The local adventurers plan to hike through Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Chile as they head south. They will return via Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and Brazil. The epic trek will take Treinish and Schlosberg directly through the Andes mountain range, an area they believe does not have an established through-hiking trail.
