For the third consecutive year, The America Cup fly fishing championships will be held in Frisco.

The week-long international competition is expected to feature 15 teams from Sept. 16-19.

“We started The America Cup right here in Frisco two years (ago) with an overwhelming response. In our first and second year we welcomed over a dozen teams from around the world,” event director David Pehle said in a statement. “The feedback that we got from competitors and local people was so amazing; we had to come back to Frisco for an even bigger and better third year.”

Split up into teams, anglers fish the waters surrounding the county having a time limit each day. The teams get points based on the number of fish caught and size of the fish.

Last year, a local duo of guides from Frisco’s Blue River Anglers took home the trophy after netting an amazing 71 fish – in the final four hours of competition. Steven Bowka and Adam Boehlke won the title fishing almost exclusively on the Blue and took pride in the win.

“It’s our namesake,” Bowka said of the Blue after last year’s tourney. “We had to at least give it a day and show people that you can catch numbers there.”

Teams from as far as Australia and Ireland have come to compete in previous years, and a bigger, more diverse group of teams is expected this fall.

The tournament will be looking for volunteers to help during the week of competition.
