Armstrong to race in 12 Hours of Snowmass

THE SNOWMASS SUN

Tour de France multi-victor Lance Armstrong is expected to compete in Sunday’s 12 Hours of Snowmass, town marketing director Susan Hamley said Thursday.

“How exciting is this, Lance Armstrong here in Snowmass on our own Fanny Hill for 12 Hours of Snowmass” (bike race and fund-raiser),” Hamley said.

Armstrong, who recently purchased a home in Aspen, competed Wednesday in the Aspen Cycling Club Smuggler-Hunter Creek competition.

That was the same day the Texas native and seven-time Tour de France victor proclaimed that he was going to “unretire” and return to professional racing. A runner-up finish in last month’s Leadville 100 bike race was said to be an impetus to get back to doing what he loves.

With regard to the ACC’s event and this weekend’s Snowmass-based fundraiser, Armstrong told The Aspen Times, “I always try to do local events. Even in Austin [Texas], they have a little weekly series, and I try to go out and do that. Pretty much it was, ‘We’re here. It’s great mountain biking.'”

Snowmass audiences may remember Armstrong’s local appearance a few years back, joining then-girlfriend Sheryl Crow on stage during her Jazz Aspen Snowmass Labor Day Festival appearance.

Expect a huge weekend in the Village featured the Snowmass Balloon Festival events each day through Sunday in Town Park, as well as the Wine Festival Saturday on the Snowmass Village Mall.
