FARMER’S KORNER ” Before the congratulations, before the hugs, before the “nice seasons” and exhales ” basically, before he took any time to enjoy the fact that the last game of the year had just been completed ” Brock Barto had a question for his coach, Jay Beckerman.

“Will you coach our club team this summer?” he asked.

This was not exactly what Beckerman was expecting at the moment, after a trying season that ended with a 3-9 record for the inaugural Summit High School boys lacrosse team. But it did pretty well to deliver Barto in a nutshell.

“His first thought after the last game of the season was ‘When can I play next?'” Beckerman said. “I think that just epitomizes his passion for the game.”

The rest of the league’s coaches recognized it, too, as Barto was named second team all-Jeffco League this spring, Summit’s only player voted to either the first or second team and one of only a few underclassmen honored.

The junior long-stick midfielder scored one goal and dished out five assists this spring, but that hardly represented his value to the Tigers.

“Every practice, every scrimmage, every game, he’s just going 100 percent all the time,” Beckerman said. “I’m proud of him because it shows that hard work does pay off. He’s a great all-around player.”

Two other Tigers, both of them juniors, were given all-league honorable mention: Braxton Campbell, who finished with more than 30 points as an attackman, and Micheal Dudick, a midfielder who was honored for winning approximately 70 percent of his faceoffs.
