Blue Goose ties Springs in opener

Staff Report

SUMMIT COUNTY – It was a tale of two different halves as the Blue Goose Rugby Club opened its season Saturday against Colorado Springs.

Newcomer Bob Smith scored the team’s first try of 2002, and Christian Heavens scored a try and booted two of three conversions as the Blue Goose bolted to a 19-8 halftime lead.

The second half, however, belonged to the visitors. After the Goose converted a penalty kick to increase the lead to 22-8, Colorado Springs stormed back against the Blue Goose bench players and took advantage of some costly penalties by the local 15 to forge a 22-22 tie at game’s end.

Jimmy Breeze added the third try of the first half for the Goose, who got strong play from Nate Flater and Zack Zellars in the second half.

The Blue Goose is scheduled to host the Denver Highlanders Saturday at Kingdom Park in Breckenridge.
